The Deccan Chargers held their own in a tense encounter with the Delhi Daredevils in Cuttack to win the match once the Daredevils lost their nerve in the exciting chase.
David Warner was giving the Daredevils a realistic chance of chasing the 172 for a win over the defending champions of 2009. It looked possible while he was at the crease, marauding the bowlers for a thirty-three ball innings for fifty-seven runs. AB de Villiers also seemed to be making good on the promise to make it count, making twenty-nine. But then the wheels fell off of the Delhi Daredevils as the Chargers eased to a win in the end.
The Daredevils were under the hammer from the very start as Adam Gilchrist got going as did Herschelle Gibbs and Andrew Symonds. It was Rohit Sharma who scored the most number of runs for the Chargers with forty-five runs from thirty balls. But the impetus began very early as Gilchrist and Gibbs took the attack to the opposition. Even when Gilchrist disappeared having made twenty-four, Gibbs’ thirty-one and Symonds’ thirty-five helped carry on the momentum to the chagrin of the Daredevils who could only look on in amazement.
While Warner and AB were at the crease, the Daredevils looked good for the chase. But Symonds and Rahul Sharma put paid to their efforts as well, and despite the Daredevils captain, Dinesh Karthik, making forty-six, the wickets kept coming as the pressure mounted and it was only a matter of time before the Chargers sealed the deal, the disappointed Daredevils realizing the futility of throwing away a good start.
