2010 IPL 3 Match 5: Chennai Super Kings Fail to Launch After Chargers Soar
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Mar 15 2010

It was one of the most stunningly one sided affairs of the IPL 3’s short life thus far as the Deccan Chargers completely dominated the game against the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai.
The Deccan Chargers have maintained their reputation of winning away from home as they virtually annihilated the CSK first with their batting and then, by subduing such a strong batting line up with their bowling.
The Deccan Chargers captain, Adam Gilchrist, took command of the situation right away, tearing into the Chennai line up of Albie Morkel and Sudeep Tyagi for a seventeen ball thirty-eight.
The Chennai Super Kings did have a slim hope when Gilchrist and VVS Laxman disappeared in succession with the score on fifty-five at the end of five overs. But it was short lived.
Herschelle Gibbs and Andrew Symonds put together a ninety-five run partnership that walloped the hosts mercilessly. Gibbs’ thirty-six ball forty-five included five boundaries and a six while Andrew Symonds hits three boundaries and as many sixes for his half century from forty-three balls.
The partnership only emphasized that it was a splendid batting pitch which should have given Chennai confidence.
However, Chennai with the likes of Matthew Hayden opening the innings could not break the shackles and by the time Justin Kemp and Mahendra Singh Dhoni got together, the experienced Chaminda Vaas wrecked their batting line up with three wickets at three down for thirty-one.
Kemp and Dhoni put on a thirty-eight run partnership as did Dhoni’s partnership with Albie Morkel. However, Justin was sent back by Pragyan Ojha for twenty-two and while Dhoni and Morkel scored forty-two runs apiece with the latter hammering three scintillating sixes, it was never going to be enough for Chennai for whom the ship had sailed.
An emphatic thirty-one run victory and Gilchrist could not be more delighted to have got away with such a comprehensive win knowing the threat that the Chennai Super Kings’ line up poses, especially after letting Kolkata Knight Riders slip through their fingers for a win the opening encounter of IPL 3.
