After the seven and a half minute itch proved irksome, Lalit Modi and the IPL governing council have come up with new rules when strategic time outs may be taken in the course of the IPL 3 matches for 2010 season.
The 2010 IPL 3 will see two time outs of 2 and a half minutes in each innings - the fielding team will take the time out between the 6th and 8th overs while the batting team will take it between the 11th and 16th over.
While Modi has indicated that these specific time outs have been designed in keeping with other international sports such as basketball, the essence of the time out has essentially come out as a guide for additional commercial breaks to rake in greater revenue.
It appears by breaking the format of a single long break, the IPL is trying to release viewer fatigue. Will it work? IPL 3 will tell.
