Shahid Afridi’s defense and sympathetic attempt has meant that he has dragged other teams into the ball tampering umbrella.
The stand-in Pakistan captain for the fifth ODI in Australia, Afridi was caught ball tampering and handed a two match ban, which means he will miss the two Twenty20 matches.
While Afridi admitted to biting the ball in order to alter the condition of the ball and stated that he should have not attempted to play with the laws of the game, he had two statements that perhaps he hoped will draw sympathy where none was forthcoming on what has really been a disastrous tour of Australia for Pakistan.
On the first turn, Afridi stated he was only trying to help his team and his bowlers because Pakistan had not won a single match in Australia! So, resorting to these tactics is justified?
Later Afridi stated that he only did what other teams do. He told the media, “There is no team in the world that doesn’t tamper with the ball.”
But clearly at a time when the Pakistan Cricket Board is in turmoil, the chief selector Iqbal Qasim has resigned, and the senior cricketers are once again being brought into focus for a distraught Pakistan team, and the PCB Chairman, Ejaz Butt, wants a new captain, Afridi knows he may have blown away a potentially good time in his career since Pakistan won the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009 in June in England. He stated, “My methods were wrong. I am embarrassed, I shouldn’t have done it. I just wanted to win us a game but this was the wrong way to do it.”
