Akram: Players Association Won't Work in India, Pakistan
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 15 2009

While the players’ associations are fast catching on, former Pakistan fast bowler and captain, Wasim Akram, feels they will not work in the Indian sub continent.
Akram was of the view that players’ association around the world are still in embryonic stage and therefore, it will be some time before the culture permeates to cricket in the sub continent.
Akram believes that the environment that the teams are in, a players’ association, as Pakistan captain Younis Khan wants to create, would not be an immediate reality because he believes there is a lot of mistrust in Indian and Pakistan teams.
The West Indies Players Association (WIPA) has also been the spotlight with their battle with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
There have been claims as recently as Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka of seniors revolting against the captain, of the captain being dictatorial and Akram himself has been a victim of the “witch hunt”.
Perhaps there is time yet for a players’ association in Pakistan. Big egos may still be ruling the Indian dressing room but they certainly showed they are a good lobbying unit together during the WADA fracas regarding the whereabouts clause.
