Allegations of a Truant Pakistan from Inside and Out
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Oct 6 2009

The strongest allegations of Pakistan playing foul in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy are coming from, ironically, within Pakistan.
The ICC’s anti corruption unit will be launched in gear a day after it was reported that Pakistan and especially, Umar Gul, was suspected of ball tampering in their match against Australia in the Group A of the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.
This is because while Pakistan captain, Younis Khan, has called his dropping of a simple catch from New Zealand’s Grant Elliot in the ICC Champions Trophy semi final as a costly mistake that will haunt him, it is strongly being interpreted as a deliberate accusation of match fixing, although it would be less clear why Pakistan would set out to lose the semi final.
The Chairman of the Sports Committee of the Pakistan National Assembly, Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, has not made more insinuations than those already suspected against Pakistan that they would underperform against Australia in order to deny India even a remote possibility of making it to the semi final stage akin to match fixing. In a startling interview of a local television network, Dasti stated that that was indeed the case and further stated scandalously that Pakistan’s loss to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy semi final was also deliberate.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has denied any wrong doing but as often happens with Pakistan’s cricket, the threat of implosion is always imminent in the face of a loss.
