On their way to the Caribbean Tour, the England Team is being given more and more responsibility including the former Captain Kevin Pietersen by the current England captain Andrew Strauss.
After the unceremonious way in which Kevin was dumped, Andrew Strauss, who took his place, seems to want to pull out every plug to placate the talented player. Kevin will be the member of the reconstituted players’ committee for the one day matches.
The concept of the players’ committee is not a new one, in fact it was successful during the tenure of Duncan Fletcher as the coach. The role of the coach at that point was different than that of Peter Moores, the sacked coach. It will surely help in bringing the two sides closer- the players and the advisory side. Their differences could be sorted out in an amicable manner within the team itself and not in public.
Andrew Strauss is giving Kevin a preferential treatment. Kevin will be the member of the players committee in Test series with Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood and Stuart Broad. Kevin will be replacing Alastair Cook.
Strauss time and again reiterated the fact that Kevin is a positive person, a very talented player, who has a lot to offer in the one day matches. He wants to involve Kevin as much as possible in the matters regarding the team’s welfare.
Besides reintroducing Kevin he also wants that there should be friendly atmosphere in the dressing room, not the “Them and Us” between the seniors and the juniors.
Maybe he trying to pass a message to the senior players because they are the ones who actually control the game.
All the suggestions are the ones which Kevin Pietersen was in favour of, but it seems he went for the change in a hurried and unplanned manner while Strauss is doing the same in slow and steady manner in which at least on the face of it, he is giving due importance to the coaches also, giving them the responsibility of an advisor and a consultant at the same time.
Andrew Strauss believes in the age old adage “Slow and Steady Wins The Race” or it should be “Slow And Steady Wins Matches”.
