After much drama, dissension and distractions, the ECB have managed to appoint England’s coach and as expected there were no surprises.
The England and Wales Cricket Board made the formal announcement that Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower would take over as the full time director of cricket for England, in other words, take up the coaching role and become part of the selection process.
Andy Flower had initially declined to take over the role of the head coach on a permanent basis in the wake of the fierce row between then coach Peter Moores and then captain Kevin Pietersen, the latter stating he could not work with Moores and Flower but later retracting as he saw Flower separately from working with Moores.
The ECB set about finding England’s new coach while asking Flower to perform in an interim position on England’s tour to the West Indies. While England failed to find their winning touch after losing the first Test in Jamaica. England did win the ODI series 3-2 but fortune also played its part.
But more important than the results, the ECB found to their satisfaction a captain and coach that appeared to be in agreement with each other and at least get along when no in agreement. After the fury that matched Kevin Pietersen’s appointment as captain knowing Peter Moores and KP did not particularly get along.
The ECB had to rule out coach options in Gary Kirsten who was intent on coaching the Indian team and seeing out his contract as was Mickey Arthur for South Africa till the 2011 World Cup. Graham Ford declined after the process took too long and the names of the likes of Tom Moody and John Buchanan were even tossed around after Ashley Giles was considered inexperienced for the post.
With the trial period over, the gloves are off. England have new challenges in the ICC World Twenty20 Championships and the Ashes coming up. But before that Andy Flower will pick the team for the home series against the West Indies. A busy schedule lies ahead. The only thing expected is that hopefully this time the crown will have fewer thorns.
