England climbed back riding on the likes of their lower order, or rather bowlers, to pose a challenge for the Australians. Will it be enough?
Australia would have thought they would have an easier time, getting rid of England’s tail. But not only did the England bowlers stand defiant, but also, they wagged their tails in glee, adding ninety nine runs to add to their overnight score of 336 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
First it was the defiance from Stuart Broad and James Anderson. But the bigger rearguard action came from Anderson and spinner Graeme Swann. Swann unleashed an array of shots that fetched England runs at the crucial finishing phase. Swann’s forty-seven was the highlight of the second day’s morning play while Anderson played the crucial holding role albeit with twenty-six runs. It pushed England’s score to 435, certainly a lot better than they would have thought when they lost wickets yesterday.
Australia batted their way without loss to thirty-six before lunch and it was largely due to the young Phillip Hughes who did not get the spray of short deliveries as was widely discussed and anticipated.
Australia still have the road ahead of them and England would do well to pull up their socks after lunch to get the Australians on the back foot.
