Asif IPL Free, But not Drug tribunal Free
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jan 21 2009

Mohammad Asif’s nightmarish adventure in international cricket continues. Languishing with a prolonged trial, in tears over his fate, Asif must wait some more to know of his future.
Asif’s life has not been easy since the Champions trophy of 2006 when he and Shoaib Akhtar was banned for drug abuse. Yet again, Asif was caught in the possession of drugs at the Dubai airport at the conclusion of the IPL’s inaugural season. It did not help matters that his urine sample taken during the IPL turned positive. His cricket career has been derailed and fans have been denied an opportunity to watch the speedster in action.
With his trial being perennially delayed, especially in the aftermath of the terror attacks in Mumbai, Asif told his Delhi Daredevils he wished to be relieved of his IPL commitment, that would fetch him somewhere around 650,000 USD. While his fate would perhaps have been decided by the outcome of the trial itself, Asif cited personal reasons for this decision and stated that he remained focused in wanting to play for Pakistan, for which he must now await clearing his name first, in a trial that is scheduled now for Saturday.
while WADA’s interference is not expected, the Pakistan Cricket Board has promised a fair trial compliant to WADA norms. Asif is said to have confessed to Dubai authorities to take consumed opium in order to boost his energy levels.
Whether Asif can now clear himself of the charges for good if the trial does finally end his saga since his IPL appearance, remains suspended for the moment.
