Brendon Nash missed his century on the way to ensuring the West Indies had something to write home about. But the Australian openers are nullifying the efforts at redemption with a strong opening partnership.
Under pressure Shane Watson once again established why he has become Australia’s choice for the opener despite the grooming of Phil Hughes. Simon Katich once again dropped anchor as Australia went about the business of scoring runs in their first innings of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, in Adelaide.
West Indies were boosted on the first day by the century of Dwayne Bravo. And expectations grew that Nash would add to the centurions of the match. But while Darren Sammy did not add to his overnight score of forty-four, Nash did to reach ninety-two before Mitchell Johnson destroyed his hopes of making a century in the country that he spent his early years in. With the wicket of Nash becoming the last wicket to fall, West Indies finished strongly on 451 in their first innings.
However, the Australian openers batted the better part of two sessions without allowing the West Indies to get within inches of their first wicket of the match. Watson was under pressure to prove he is not a stop gap but rather a bastman who has stepped up to a role and intends to be an integral part of the make up of the Australian test team.
With Katich in tow, Watson went about his business to reach an unbeaten ninety-six with Katich batting on seventy-one as Australia finished on 174 at stumps on the second day.
