The rowdy repartee gave way to a more somber acceptance of the match referee’s verdict.
West Indies’ Sulieman Benn has been slapped with a two ODI ban for the aggressive confrontation that put him in the dock with a Level 2 breach for violation of code of conduct in the third Test in Perth. Australian wicket keeper Brad Haddin was fined 25 per cent of his match fee while the Australian fast bowler, Mitchell Johnson, was lucky to get away with a 10 per cent match fee fine after being involved in a push and shove incident with Benn.
The match referee, Chris Broad, stated that Benn’s degree of punishment could have been less severe but because of his not pleading guilty, he has been given this ban.
Meanwhile, Haddin admitted that his reactions were over the top, and it was a ugly display for fans which should have been avoided. Haddin did not like the fact that Benn threatened to throw the ball at the batsman even though the latter did not leave the crease. When he pointed his bat in aggression to Benn, Benn is quoted as saying, “”Don’t push your f—–g bat at me, man” to which Haddin is said to have countered with “get back and bowl”.
Haddin’s reactions were prompted after the skirmish between Johnson and Benn, even though it appeared that the first time, Benn was genuinely interested in getting to the ball and inadvertently getting in the way of the batting Johnson, his pointing fingers at Haddin during the verbal confrontation appears to have hit the side of Johnson’s helmet, prompting the latter to then physically shove Benn out of the way.
Though perhaps Benn deserved the reprimand, though his skipper Chris Gayle believes Benn was provoked, one does feel that the Australians have got off the hook by simply using the word “sorry” in front of the match referee.
