Aus WI T1 Day 1: Katich Strokeplay Gives Hosts the Edge
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Nov 26 2009

Australia found their progress pegged back by a West Indies team that is trying to look brave, despite Simon Katich’s ninety-two runs on the first day of the first Test at the Gabba.
The West Indies’ tour of Australia began with much tension over the availability of captain Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan. In the end, Gayle made the first Test but Sarwan did not.
However, the focus was on Australia they batted first. And Australia posed the usual suspects in the captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey scoring half centuries and Michael Clarke missed one by nine runs.
But leading the way was Simon Katich who was unfortunate to have missed out on a century but by the time he was dismissed, Australia were sitting pretty on three down for 200. Dwayne Bravo played his part in removing Katich and Clarke but the situation on day one now stands interesting poised.
Significantly for the West Indies, they were able to pick up wickets with some consistency though perhaps much lies on the second day’s morning if the West Indies are able to break down the remaining five wickets for a negligible amount of runs and then, blaze away with the bat.
