Aus WI T1 Day 3 Aftermath and T2 Preview: WI Need to Look Past this Defeat, feels Gayle
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Nov 30 2009

An innings and sixty-five runs defeat in three days on a decent batting pitch would concern any team. And West Indies are no different. But West Indies did have a few sparkling moments which they will have to convert to change the situation dramatically. The captain is willing to fight it out.
West Indies do not have to face the Man of the Match at the Gabba in the first Test, Ben Hilfenhaus, who has been ruled out with a knee injury and Clint McKay named to replace him. However, West Indies have lost one of their own in the aftermath with Jerome Taylor going back home with a back injury.
What it does not change is the fact that despite Travis Dowlin’s sixty-two in the first innings when the West Indies scored 228 runs and the incredible century by Adrian Barath, the even more incredulous total for the West Indies in the second innings - 187 did not give West Indies a fighting chance in the first Test that ended in three days, losing their way further from 134 for five at stumps on the second day to losing fifteen wickets and the match on the third day.
While Chris Gayle has maintained that captaining the side was pivotal to him and was not about to shirk that duty, there are reports that Australia have been an unwilling participant in this series given that the gap between the two teams’ strengths is enough to kill the game.
It would explain how Australia amassed 580 while West Indies have struggled to get to 250 in one innings. A huge Test awaits them in four days’ time in Adelaide and Hilfenhaus’ absence is not likely to change the story and neither is just the inclusion of Ramnaresh Sarwan who is expected to return to the team, even though the Australian coach, Tim Nielsen, is perhaps being magnanimous is giving bytes that he expects a stronger West Indies to step foot at the Adelaide Oval.
