Bang WI Test 2 Preview: WIPA Demand Apology, as do WICB
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jul 16 2009

This is an all out war. The WICB is demanding an apology from the WIPA. The WIPA is giving them one in mock sarcasm even as they are demanding state governments to now intervene.
The second Test between Bangladesh and West Indies gets underway on Friday. However, once again Chris Gayle and his men remain absent from the ground. As Bangladesh attempt to do the unthinkable – seal a Test series victory abroad against the West Indies, the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players Association are locked in a bitter battle that appears to have gone into a stalemate.
There are doubts over whether Mashrafe Mortaza can recover in time to lead his team in the second Test and the onus officially could fall on Shakib Al Hasan. Neither team is likely to make sweeping changes to their teams although Ryan Hinds has been included in the West Indies team. Grenada could well see history being made.
The focus though is not entirely on the field. The WICB have demanded that WIPA apologise, call off the strike and come back to represent the West Indies team. The WIPA have in turn apologized for their absence but are not sorry because they believe that the sport in the island nations is being conducted unprofessionally and have now called for the Guyana’s help through the CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Commercial Market) to intervene against the malaise in the West Indies Cricket Board.
The WICB has firmly stated that they will go ahead and pick players from the current squad for Bangladesh’s tour to the West Indies as well as those outside for the probables for the ICC Champions Trophy in September in South Africa unless the players withdraw their strike. Players have refused to come to the ground unless the contract is in place while the WICB is refusing to discuss matters in what they believe is coercion from the players association.
The WICB has stated that they will clear the dues for the players from the two tours against England and India and will also pay up the payments for the ICC World Twenty20 in England as soon as their share is disbursed from the ICC, in a clear indicator that they are willing to go ahead with a provisional team rather than accede to the top players.
