BBC pooh-poohs Pakistani scribe's demand to defend itself in court

An unperturbed BBC said it would stoutly defend itself after being sued by a Pakistani journalist who alleged that he had been wrongly linked to cricket coach Bob Woolmer’s murder by the broadcaster.

The problem started after a BCC Panorama programme, called ‘Death at the World Cup’, showed what it claimed the last footage of the slain coach Woolmer in which couple of Pakistani journalists were spotted with him.

Ehsan Qureshi, a journalist with the Associated Press of Pakistan who was seen in the footage, sued BBC seeking substantial damages for inferring that he was linked to the murder case.

Qureshi’s lawyers served the legal notice in which it was claimed that the programme gave this impression as if Qureshi was the suspect of the murder.

BBC, however, was unruffled by the legal notice and said they would defend themselves in the court of law.

A BBC spokesman said it was preposterous to think that the programme was defamatory or damaged Qureshi’s image and said,

Any legal action will be vigorously defended by the BBC.

Woolmer was murdered in his Kingston hotel room on March 18 and the Jamaican Police are yet to solve the mystery.
