BCCI Backing Players on WADA Leaves ICC in Quandary
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Aug 2 2009

The BCCI Emergency Meeting has spoken out against WADA and has instead back the players, leaving the ICC to sort matters out with WADA and FICA.
The world anti doping agency has run into trouble with Indian cricketers over their disclosing their whereabouts two months in advance. With the deadline having lapsed, the FICA (Federation of International Cricketers Association) has put pressure on the ICC to either impose penalty on the Indian cricketers (with India not being in FICA) or allow the same rule to apply for all international cricketers, making the agreement null and void.
The BCCI has learnt of the players’ concerns about not wanting to reveal their whereabouts in advance to create security concerns and also raising the constitutional point about respecting the privacy of every citizen. Surprisingly these points have not been raised by other Indian athletes including Olympic Gold winner, Abhinav Bindra, who has no qualms about it.
What this now means that the BCCI, through president Shashank Manohar, will now speak to the ICC and convey the outcome of the meeting with players such as Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. With the Indians now dead set against signing the WADA agreement and the body backing them, the ICC will now have to decide one way or another and earn the wrath of FICA.
