Cricket can be a cruel game and nobody knows it better than Binga. Brett Lee’s former team mates are encouraging him to increasingly contemplate life away from the game.
While Brett Lee has been quoted as saying that if he cannot bowl fast, he will not bowl at all, his former team mates think that is precisely why he must retire.
Former Australian fast bowler, Jason Gillespie, tasted bitterness when he was edged out during the 2005 Ashes series. The reason for that, former Australian captain, Mark Taylor, believes is because Gillespie lost pace and subsequently his place in the Australian squad. Both believe the same could be the case with Lee.
Referring to the likes of Dennis Lillee and Glenn McGrath who were both effective fast medium bowlers, Taylor believes the undoing of Lee will be that he will be reduced to nothing if he cannot bowl fast.
Gillespie also thinks that if Lee should even recover from the elbow injury, his age at thirty-three will make him stand far behind in line for the Test spot and thereby, deny him the perfect farewell.
However, the temptation of simply retiring from Test cricket, although ‘Binga’ loves the format, may weigh on Lee’s mind with the intention to only play the Twenty20 and ODIs a la Andrew Flintoff so as to be able to spend more time with his son Preston post divorce from Liz Kemp.
As the voice of retirement gathers momentum not only from these two former team mates but also, from the possibility of Lee having to work his way back into the team with the rise of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger, Lee knows the road will be an uphill climb, records notwithstanding.
But Lee only wants to concentrate on the elbow and then, assess the situation.
