The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Ejaz Butt, has told media in Pakistan that he completely stands by the punishments to the Pakistan cricketers and that there was nothing to worry about the future of Pakistan cricket.
The PCB sent ripples throughout the cricket world when they banned Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan indefinitely from playing international cricket for Pakistan. Similarly, they handed one life bans to Shoaib Mallik and Rana Naved ul Hasan and fines for the Akmal brothers and Shahid Afridi.
Butt justified the punishments, “This problem of indiscipline and groupings in the team has been festering for a while now and we thought this was the best time to take action. I am not apologetic; I think the board has taken the right decision and such strong action was urgently required to put Pakistan cricket back on the right track.”
He even suggested that Pakistan cricket would not suffer by the magnitude of punitive measures on Pakistan’s most experienced cricketers, “We are not worried about the consequences of our action. There is no shortage of talent in Pakistan and we want players to remember they have to give 100% to the country and follow the code of conduct.”
Pakistan is cracking the whip on the players at the moment, preceding another national crisis as the Pakistan hockey team players resigned in unison, taking responsibility for Pakistan’s poor performance in the 2010 Hockey World Cup. Shake ups are in order.
