New Zealand proved a mixed bag after changing track. Deciding the bat first for the first time in the series, Ross Taylor’s innings caused a few problems and have New Zealand an interesting total to defend.
New Zealand once again played the game of caution as Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill looked circumspect up front. Though their partnership ensured there were no quick wickets for Australia, after the slow and steady sixty-nine in eighteen overs, New Zealand suffered a bit of a crash.
After reaching forty-five and changing into a more aggressive mode, Guptill miscued one Mitchell Johnson bouncer and then, followed Peter Fulton back to the pavilion. McCullum disappeared as well after making thirty-three and New Zealand look perilous at three down for eighty-six in twenty-three overs, still over half way to go and much more to do to pose a problem for the hosts and keep the Chappell Hadlee Trophy on their shelf.
As Grant Elliot, the man of the moment for New Zealand in the last two matches, walked in, hopes rose. However, it was Ross Taylor who hung around and indulged in some lusty hitting, especially in New Zealand’s batting power play in the final stages. Elliot proved brief company as did Neil Broom. In the end games, Kyle Mills, who would have to do more with the ball, wielded his bat to good effect for a brief cameo of twenty-three.
Meanwhile, players also indulged in a bit of fund raising, dedicating their match fees for the match, performing with the ball and bat to raise additional funds from sponsors, going around the ground collecting precious pennies while encouraging television viewers to do the same in the after math of the devastating bushfires raging in Victoria.
The target of 245 is not beyond Australia. But then most targets in Australia’s summer have not been. But if New Zealand can produce a mesmerizing spell to knock out the men in form, it could prove a teaser for the hosts.
