Chappell Hadlee ODI 5: Dramatic Match Ends in Dismay
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Feb 13 2009

New Zealand were handed a cruel twist of fate where they fought their way through difficult patches to bring the game under their control before rain put paid to their efforts as well as to the Chappell Hadlee series.
New Zealand, who led the Chappell Hadlee series 2-0 before letting Australia in, were facing a tricky situation in a Twenty20 like match after rain in Brisbane reduced the game. Martin Guptill, unbeaten on sixty-four, virtually single handedly turned things around for New Zealand that kept losing wickets while still on course for victory. Needing just thirty-three from thirty-six balls, the rain clouds opened up again and cruelly denied New Zealand an opportunity to better their chances of wresting the Chappell Hadlee series from the Australians, who now retain it by virtue of having won it last year.
Earlier in the match, it was another exalting innings from Brad Haddin for eighty-eight alongside debutant Callum Ferguson who made a half century that allowed Australia to make 168 when they seemed they could be shot out for less. That they did eventually did not matter in the final result of the match – a no result, but Australia’s comeback has allowed them from registering another loss of series.
