Cheerleaders Of Another Encounter
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 28 2009

After South Africa gave Lalit Modi the idea that cheerleaders could do the job, they have once again set a precedent of choice. But one gets the feeling, this one isn’t going to catch on.
South Africa employed tribal talent not only during the ICC Champions Trophy but also during the IPL 2 staged in South Africa as well as the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 during their respective opening ceremony.
However, for the duration of the two Twenty20 tournaments, they employed female dancers to double up as cheerleaders, spawning the mandatory rule in the ICC to field cheerleaders that eventually ran into controversy.
This time, South Africa as hosts have done things a little different. They have employed Zulu drummers to entertain the crowds in lieu of the female dancers, aka cheerleaders.
However, with many people in India wondering what happened to the foreign girls strutting their stuff, one gets the feeling Modi would be less inclined to have girls in ghagra cholis keeping the fans interested at tournaments. Too bad, those dresses are meant only for Navratri and Dassera - back to the closet a la Katherine Heigl’s 27 Dresses as a bridesmaid.
