Once again it was the rise of South Africa’s young guns that did the England county team in in the Champions League Twenty20 Super Eights.
Cornelius Johannes de Villiers or CJ de Villiers is developing a reputation for himself as one of South Africa’s rising bowling stars. If his super over eliminator was something to write home about, his performances for the Diamond Eagles against the Somerset Sabres should send an early warning to international cricket teams.
Marcus Trescothick left India and captain Justin Langer had to taste defeat again in a strange tournament that has sent Sabres struggling. Apart from James Hildreth’s thirty-one runs and Wes Durston’s fifty-seven runs, no one could hold up against CJ de Villiers who once again who decimated the top order with four wickets for seventeen runs in his four overs, the runs only leaking in the latter part of his spell and his wickets coming with still single digit run concession.
Morne van Wyk virtually carried the Eagles through with a well built forty-seven runs and Ryan Bailey holding out for twenty-nine runs to finish matters nicely for the South African team and eight balls to spare as well!
