Michael Clarke is ambitious. Of that there is little doubt. But that he has a huge respect for his predecessors has also become apparent as he opened up about the Australian captaincy.
Clarke assumed reins of the Australian Twenty20 captaincy following Ricky Ponting’s retirement from the Twenty20 format following the Ashes 2009 defeat.
While Clarke, aka Pup, is delighted at the opportunity and also, of being reckoned as the heir to the captaincy currently held by Ponting, Clarke is showing that he is ready for responsibility whenever it should come.
But Clarke has also stated that he would not like to take over the captaincy of the Australian team in Ponting’s time. Instead, he would like Ricky Ponting, nicknamed Punter, to carry on for as long as possible so that it gives Clarke the opportunity to learn more from the man he admires, apart from his own father and Shane Warne. Clarke even stretched himself by stating that he would like Ponting to retire on the day he himself retires.
Currently Clarke is returning for the home series against the West Indies after a back problem that has kept him out of the India Australia ODI series as well as the ICC Champions Trophy 2009.
