England’s cricketers said, take us lightly at your peril. Sri Lanka saw the ruthlessness of the England side as they were bowled out for 212, could have been a lot less, in their Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Wanderers, Johannesburg.
England showed scant respect for the Sri Lankan cricket team that made South Africa look poor in the first match of Group B. James Anderson, Graham Onions and Stuart Broad systematically dissected Sri Lanka’s batting brilliance to leave them feeling hollow just days after touching the highs of making a 300 + target.
Anderson proved the early terror, removing the likes of Tillekeratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene while Onions made little of Sanath Jayasuriya and Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara. In no time (or precisely 5.2 overs), seventeen for four.
Although Thilan Samaraweera made thirty, Thilina Kandamby and Angelo Matthews made respective half centuries in a fightback session of eighty-two runs, England came back into the match with more wicket bursts as Sri Lanka finished on 212 in 47.3 overs. Anderson and Broad returned with three wickets each while Onions picked two.
Can England take inspiration from their bowling efforts or will it be a few runs too many conceded in the middle?
