CT NZ v Eng: New Zealand Stampede England for Semi Final spot
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 30 2009

What drama to the finish. After making a dramatic start of their intention, New Zealand overcame a last minute situation mission to make the semi final spot from Group B.
The ICC Champions Trophy saw Sri Lanka holding tight to their chairs hoping a New Zealand slip against a reinvigoured England would give them an outside chance of qualification. However, just like the hosts, South Africa, Sri Lanka failed to enjoy a backdoor entry as New Zealand brought England down to earth.
Shane Bond made the impact that New Zealand were looking for it and it was a timely performance given than New Zealand needed to win their final Group B tie to make it to the semi finals. From three for thirteen, Paul Collingwood’s forty runs and Ravi Bopara’s thirty added some substance, although it was considered a lot more would be required to stop New Zealand in their tracks.

New Zealand began on an emphatic chase in search of 147 with Brendon McCullum showing form of old with forty-eight runs from thirty-nine balls and Martin Guptill making an equally impressive fifty-three from fifty-five balls. But from eighty-four for no loss, New Zealand suffered a dangerous tussle against their nerves losing three wickets between 113 and 118, Stuart Broad shining with four wickets and giving New Zealand a real scare.
But after tasting the nerve racking moments before the final seal, New Zealand managed to go home with four wickets to spare in the twenty-nineth over.
