CT SA v SL Half Time: Hosts Face Stiff Target
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 22 2009

South Africa did not get their act quite together in Sri Lanka’s bowling innings which now means that South Africa need to chase down 320 to put points on the table in Group B.
South Africa got the first wicket of the key man, Sanath Jayasuriya, as Dale Steyn trapped him lbw. However, what started from sixteen for one in the third over snowballed into a gigantic problem for the hosts at Centurion.
A 158 partnership for the third wicket between Tillekeratne Dilshan and Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara, kept the hosts on their toes with the former in particular ruthless on the an attack that has shown a lack of being in match situations enough prior to the ICC Champions Trophy.
Dilshan scored his century from eighty-seven balls with a telling impact on the panic stricken hosts who failed to find the next breakthrough until the twenty-eighth over by which time Sri Lanka had amassed 127 runs.
Sangakkara’s half century and his partnership with Dilshan was broken by JP Duminy with Steyn returning to remove Dilshan, but Sri Lanka got another partnership going that amounted to 116 runs between Mahela Jayawardene, who made seventy-seven runs, and Thilan Samaraweera with thirty-seven runs.
Sri Lanka did lose their way as Wayne Parnell picked two wickets in two balls, to make his match tally to three wickets, but it was a largely forgettable effort for him as well as Jacques Kallis and in particular, Albie Morkel, who went for thirty-nine runs in his four overs. Only Roelof van der Merwe could say he had a decent spell with no wickets for forty-two runs from his ten overs.
But none of that matters now. What South Africa need is a couple of centurions at Centurion!
