CT SL V NZ Half Time: Injured Ryder Raises Team; NZ Win Could make it Interesting
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Sep 27 2009

In a strong performance, New Zealand raised 315 in their first innings, but not without drama. Now a win against Sri Lanka here at the Wanderers, Johannesburg could make Group B a tight fisted battle in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Jesse Ryder suffered what is believed to be a groin injury in the very early part of his innings. However, Ryder decided to use his power wielding bat to good effect, even as he was hampered enough to call for a runner, leaving his participation in the rest of the tournament in doubt.
His seventy-four runs from fifty-eight balls really gave New Zealand a terrific start including his participation for the rest of the tournament. His opening partnership with Brendon McCullum (forty-six runs) for 125 in twenty overs was crucial in not only giving New Zealand the much needed impetus but also, for denting Sri Lankan aspirations.
As heroic as Ryder’s performance was, his dismissal led to a slide, a dangerous one for New Zealand as they were reduced to four down for 140 and 5 for 160 at the fall of Neil Broom’s wicket.
But thereafter Martin Guptill and New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori, formed a partnership that took the game once again away from Sri Lanka. Vettori’s forty-eight and Guptill’s sixty-six runs from seventy-six balls propped New Zealand once again in the direction of 300 and despite the tense middle, they got to the magic total of 315.
If New Zealand defend this target, Group B will become a four way affair, and therefore, South Africa, in their final group match today, need to beat England to stay firmly in the hand.
It is getting too hot!
