India’s new skipper is perhaps stretching his matter-of-fact talk too much in the public as one looks back on his post match press conference in New Zealand.
Dhoni ranted on and on after his team lost to the Black Caps in Christchurch rather comprehensively. He spoke about the fact that while most consider Twenty20 game to be short, there is time enough to pace one’s innings.
He stated that in the aftermath of what happened in the match, it was important for the team “not to go through the motions” by which he meant that they had perhaps followed Virender Sehwag’s blazing start and decided to do pretty much the same and ended up perishing by losing crucial wickets.
He was also disappointed by the fact that no one put his hand to take responsibility for playing through the innings, which would have ensured India had a few more runs on board.
His tirade, as legitimate as it was, was perhaps a little too forthcoming for a talk that should have ideally been left for the dressing room. His honesty stretched out as his echoed his feelings which should have perhaps been done in the dressing room where the boys would have been forced to alertness to their skipper’s demands.
No one minds a curt, clear, “We did not play to our potential.” The fact that the skipper felt the need to pour out his team’s inconsistencies and sheer lack of strategy after being such a winning unit only shows it is hurting the otherwise cool skipper. That alone should be motivation for this team whose ability to bounce back cannot be understated.
