There is so much speculation surrounding the appointment of a coach to the England team. But it appears that the actual people set to be interviewed still remains ambiguous.
Gary Kirsten is denying having spoken to any one remotely related to the ECB, but his name continues to float amongst the short listed candidates set to interview by Hugh Morris and a panel led by him next week.
The ECB is interested in appointing a coach before the West Indies tour England in a return leg on the 6th of May. However, it could well be Andy Flower, who is playing the stand in head coach at the moment to Andrew Strauss, who could land the job given his time with the England team as well as because of his having played county cricket for England since matters flared up in Zimbabwe.
While Kirsten seems to have found a few followers within the ECB, apparently in contention is also John Wright who also coached India between 2000 and 2005.
Another name doing the rounds is that of Mickey Arthur. But the South African coach has indicated that he is keen to keep his contract with South Africa intact until the 2011 World Cup for which he has definite plans in place with captain Graeme Smith. Kirsten towed the same line and the fact that his contract with the Indian team till 2010 is something Kirsten is definitely keen on.
With so much confusion reigning, matters will perhaps get only clearer once the interviews get underway. The ECB want a transparent process to find England’s next coach. But such mystery shrouded around the candidates, one can only hope that the ECB keeps the sensitivities of the previous fracas between Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores before doing what is right for England.
