The kick off game to the ICC World Twenty20 Cricket in Johannesburg was all set for a record making. With a scintillating knock Chris Gayle etched his name in the record books for the first international Twenty20 ton. The partnership of 145 between Gayle and Devon Smith is also the highest so far. As Gayle dealt in maximum number of sixes, Herschelle Gibbs hit highest number of fours. South Africa’s 208 for 2 to overcome the West Indies’ total of 205, also the highest chasing and a batting score.
Opener Gayle adjudged man of the match gave the tournament a thrilling start it deserved who raced to 117 off mere 57 deliveries. After his depart the other West Indies batsmen were less effective and the resultant total appeared a tough ask for the hosts.
Ironically the West Indies let themselves down in the field as a number of costly dropped catches helped South Africa reach the victory target. Amongst them, Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp were the main beneficiaries. The Windies also conceded as many as 28 extras, yet another world record in the shortest version of the game. Justin Kemp went on to hit 46 not out from just 22 deliveries. It was Gibbs who rounded off the match by hitting the winning streak with a four, in the 17th over.
Bravo! South Africa to dig in where a lot of teams would have capitulated. Furthermore, deeming of more entertaining cricket on the way, yet to unfold.
