The England coach is not holding back on what he thinks about the South African team and their tactics.
Just two Twenty20 matches into England’s tour to South Africa and the claws came out. The South African team, and the coach, Mickey Arthur, in particular, derided some of England’s decisions during the second Twenty20 in Centurion where the South African captain, Graeme Smith, and Loots Bosman ran England aground.
Now the England coach, Andy Flower, has reacted to those comments stating that perhaps South Africa’s status as the number one team in the world is making them an arrogant lot who cannot see their shortcomings but are quickly to put England down.
Amongst the many things commented upon, was the fact that there were more South Africans on the field, alluding the partnership between Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Arthur also questioned why the spinner Adil Rashid was only bowled one over, although Rashid conceded twenty-five runs in a single over.
Commenting on naming Alastair Cook as captain for the match, Flower stated it was a deliberate attempt to give Cook a taste for the job looking into the future but refused to be drawn into a verbal duel on what he felt separated England and South Africa in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
