History is not just chasing Gambhir; it is chasing his partnership with Virender Sehwag as well!
After their first innings heroics in Green Park, Kanpur, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are just 506 runs shy of equalling the record for the most number of runs by an opening partnership held by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan who have 3010 runs from 59 matches at an average of 53.75.
But Gambhir and Sehwag have opportunity to better the record having partnered each other in 43 Tests at an average of 59.61. Incidentally this was only the sixth time in Indian cricket that both openers have scored centuries in the same innings.
Gambhir and Sehwag are also amongst the top five opening partners of all times with their average and their predecessors go a while back in history. In that sense, they are rewriting history for the modern day game.
