John Gloster, the former Indian cricket team physio, draws another angle to the Indian cricketers’ performances and also, encourages them to skip tournaments such as the IPL if bigger national commitments are at stake.
Gloster, an Australian who was the phsyio of the Indian team, states that having an Indian for a wife has made him realize how much Indians are connected to their families emotionally. But he has stated that the negative aspect to this is the fact that Indian cricketers tend to get homesick very easily and that could also explain the fatigue factor, which may not be as physical as it is mental.
While former Australian captain, Steve Waugh, was one voice among many who claimed that fatigue could not be an excuse for India’s poor performance in the recently concluded ICC World Twenty20 in England, their continuing performances against the West Indies in the ODI series in the caribbean certainly could be an indicator as well of what Gloster is talking about.
Gloster has also gone one step beyond to urge Indian cricketers to forego their commitments to the IPL if it means that they would be mentally and physically in better shape for the international assignments for India.
Already Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Zaheer Khan have not made the trip to the Caribbean. In fact Virender Sehwag’s injury disclosure caused a rift between Sehwag and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain. Now the captain himself appears in pain over back and ankle injuries. Perhaps India need to work on their fitness harder than their foreign counterparts.
