Hashim Amla India South Africa First Test Day 2 A Breeze; Thanks Kallis
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Feb 8 2010

It is not everyday that a batsman gets to redeem himself in the same innings. But Hashim Amla not only survived but wrote a grand tale with the visitors an immediate ascendancy.
The first day of the first Test of the India South Africa Test series saw Jacques Kallis dominate the headlines, even as Hashim Amla fought his way through a century. But the honours on day two belonged almost entirely to Amla and Amla alone at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.
While all eyes were on Kallis to see if he could finally score that elusive double century, Amla was creating a story uniquely his own. After being a survivor on day one (his batting for the early part of the first day was one of an unsure, over cautious batsman who gave way to a more confident one after tea), Amla reaped richer dividends on day two when he pulled the rabbit out of the hat and beat Kallis to the race.
Kallis was dismissed by Harbhajan Singh for 173 but Amla went onto score big. And in his own words, he had Kallis to thank for because the latter took the heat off him. While Amla poked and prodded around, Kallis was keeping the momentum of denying India any in roads. Thereafter, Amla found his own momentum that carried him into day two.
Amla remained unbeaten on 253 when South Africa, with the weight of his runs, decided to declare after AB de Villiers added fifty-three and Mark Boucher made thirty-nine. South Africa declared on 558 for six giving India a tense few overs at the end of the day that they safely saw out.
