Herschelle Gibbs’ career may not be over after all for South Africa as he received a surprise call up following Jacques Kallis’ injury.
It was primarily Gibbs’ loss of form and consistency that forced the selectors to use Kallis in the opener’s slot to partner South African captain, Graeme Smith.
But the ongoing England tour of South Africa has seen Kallis ruled out of the series with a rib fracture, forcing the selectors to bring in Hashim Amla in the opening position. But for replacement, they have chosen to go with Gibbs who did not originally find a slot in the squad for the first three ODIs.
With the comprehensive defeat in the second ODI after the first ODI was ruled out has prompted the decision and it will be interesting to see if Gibbs will be inducted into the playing XI straightaway or if he will have to warm the bench for a real chance to play in the series.
