Former Australian captain, Ian Chappell, has called for calm in the face of defeat, especially when dealing with Ricky Ponting.
Ian Chappell believes that despite what the numbers game suggests, which also states that Ricky Ponting goes down as only the second Australian captain to let slip the Ashes urn in the 132 years of cricketing history, Ricky Ponting is a good captain, even better than Steve Waugh, his predecessor.
Chappell was wary of Australia making hasty plans to dismiss Ponting from the post, especially now with Australia slipping to fourth in the ICC Test rankings which means South Africa are finally on top, stating that instead of worrying about Ponting, Australia would be left to look for another captain as good as him.
He also believed that the selectors had let Ponting down by picking an all seam attack when spin was suggested on such a dry surface. He was also of the opinion that even if Ponting did decide to go with an unchanged squad, the onus lay on the selectors’ to change his mind and overrule his decision in the event of such a scenario.
Chappell believed Australia had a better chance in the future if the selectors picked a team that could then be groomed under Ponting.
And here’s for a take on the selection process: Chappell claims that the Oval drubbing came at a time when had it not, Australia would keep making the same errors in selection of the team.
