The ICC World Twenty20 in England may have missed out on the hype, thanks to the controversial IPL and the lack of controversy in this tournament yet.
Unlike the IPL 2 in South Africa, the scheduling of the second edition of the Twenty20 tournament in England has not caused grave consternation in terms of hosting. While the IPL 2 moved out of Indi at the behest of Lalit Modi and his men, the ICC World Twenty20 has been making rather sedate build up in the run up to the event.
And unlike the IPL that continues to ask questions of the ICC in terms of conflicting with other ICC approved events, the T20 tournament has been accepted widely after its unprecedented success in South Africa in 2007 when it was first staged and with India winning the edition triumphantly.
But as the ICC has feared, perhaps the ICC World Twenty20 has missed the hype given that there was only a gap of ten days before the players changed their shirts and their allegiance from the IPL 2 held in South Africa. The focus was heavily biased in favour of the IPL and hence, the build up to the World Twenty20 World Cup has been rather subdued in contrast.
There is also an issue being brought up in the context as to whether the overkill of Twenty20 through the long and exhaustive IPL has rather blunted interests for the prestigious ICC tournament. While it has not deterred Modi from contemplating a second IPL, it seems to have certainly given players and spectators very little time to be truly hungry for another marathon. Not that the spectators would be complaining too much. While they would not mind varying contests, certainly a gap would have been ideal to whet the appetite more.
Given the crowd that turned up to watch the Indo-Pak warm up match, there is hope that the ICC will eventually rake in the eye balls, but have the viewers even marginally tired of batting their eyelids?
