A dogged match saw South Africa and New Zealand battle it out for psychological advantage ahead of the Super Eight clash in the ICC World Twenty20 in England.
South Africa managed just three innings of note as they went from one down for sixty-three to being four down for sixty-four. While Jacques Kallis with twenty-four and skipper Graeme Smith on thirty-three scored at the top of the order, the only other innings of significance coming from Jean Paul Duminy for twenty-nine. South Africa were left feeling like they had underperformed as they finished up with 128 for seven in their twenty overs.
But New Zealand did not have it easy either. The South Africans were in no mood to relent despite the fact that the runs to defend had starkly diminished. Stand in captain Brendon McCullum’s fifty-seven kept New Zealand interested and when Ross Taylor combined Jacob Oram, it appeared that this would be the partnership, if any, that could finish the matter in New Zealand’s favour. But runs were hard fought for and the going became tough as South Africa defended every run as if it were the final.
On a slow turning track, the South Africans spinner did not allow the acceleration from the New Zealand batsmen. Johan Botha bowled tight while Roelof van der Merwe is quickly developing a reputation for being a useful bowler, taking two wickets on this occasion while tightening the screws impeccably.
In the end, South Africa plucked it with a run to spare while New Zealand were left not amused with five wickets still unused.
