ICC World Twenty20: Sri Lanka Show Australia the Door
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jun 9 2009

The captain’s worst fears came true as Australia were forced to bow out early courtesy Sri Lanka from the ICC World Twenty20 in England.
Ricky Ponting’s expressed fears that his team could be sitting around waiting for the Ashes and he was not wrong. Australia have two weeks now to comprehend their loss in the Twenty20 format and regroup for the Ashes ahead. England though have recovered from their shock defeat against the Netherlands to punish Pakistan and enter the Super Eights.
Sri Lanka showed what steady batting can do –pile on the runs in the conforming format. Tillekeratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara scored heavily for Sri Lanka in their chase of Australia’s 159. Australia did not make a great case for themselves earlier in their innings, losing Twenty20 specialist David Warner early for naught and had Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting and David Hussey all getting starts but none really making a dent that could pose a real challenge to the Sri Lankans later in the day.
Sri Lanka were hardly threatened in their chase, despite the loss of wickets with opener Dilshan scoring a half century to begin with and Sangakkara scoring another to edge Sri Lanka to victory, with Jehan Mubarak scoring the final trickle of runs that saw Sri Lanka win by six wickets with an over to spare.
Significantly it meant that after the losses to West Indies and Sri Lanka, Australia have become the first major team to crash out of the ICC World Twenty20 in England.
