ICC World Twenty20 Super Eights: Sri Lanka See Past Pakistan
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jun 15 2009

In the battle between Asian nations, Sri Lanka proved the superior of the two teams in the Super Eights of the ICC World Twenty20.
Sri Lanka relied heavily on the start provided by Tillekeratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya as their innings steadily lost wickets. While Dishan made forty-six, Jayasuriya was not far behind on twenty-six, the only two notable contributions and saw Sri Lanka reach 150 despite the set back of losing quick wickets in the middle of the innings as Umar Gul, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal combined for Pakistan’s cause.
On Pakistan’s part, they failed to get their opening partnership doing and it was once again left to the middle order to make something of the chase. Pakistan captain Younis Khan stood out with his half century while the familiar trio that include Shoaib Mallik and Misbah-ul Haq, who got together to trounce the Netherlands team, were at it once again.
But Sri Lanka fought off Pakistan’s resurgence through a late burst of wickets courtesy Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan to get the team from the Emerald Isles victory by nineteen runs .
