ICC World Twenty20 Super Eights: Windies Pull Wind Out of India’s Sails
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jun 15 2009

India had their comeuppance against a resurgent West Indian team and tasting defeat did not go down well for the defending champions of the ICC World Twenty20 in England.
India struggled to get past the accurate, keen bowling of the West Indies bowling and in particular, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Bravo. As a result, they found themselves down at three for twenty-nine and but for Yuvraj Singh’s outstanding knock of sixty-seven from forty-three balls. Bouncers troubled the opening duo, Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, and India were exposed. Yusuf Pathan lent support with thirty-one as India reached a total of 153.
But West Indies had their hero in the batting department as well. West Indies captain, Chris Gayle played well for twenty-four while finding a worthy partner in Lendl Simmons who made forty-four off thirty-seven balls. But for the West Indies to pull off the seemingly unimaginable, another innings of glory was required. Dwayne Bravo stepped up and his innings of sixty-six was priceless as West Indies chased down successfully to win from needing thirty-nine runs in twenty-four balls.
India’s woes had only begun as they were beaten for the first time in this edition and that too at Lord’s.
