The anticipated 17000th ODI run was finally scored. But for Sachin Tendulkar, everything about cricket remains an unfinished business.
Sachin Tendulkar’s seven runs appeared to take forever in the fifth ODI of the India Australia ODI series at Hyderabad. For the crowd it mattered little that India were chasing 350 and that they had not got off to a blazing start. They seemed rather interested and fervent in their prayers for Tendulkar to get to the 17000 ODI run mark, rather uncharacteristic since cricket prides itself on the game being bigger than the individual.
But this was a moment amongst many that would be locked in history not only of Tendulkar’s achievements but also, of the greatest men to have ever played the game.
Ben Hilfenhaus could keep Tendulkar locked on 16,999 runs only for two balls, eventually Tendulkar found a way to find a run that would cause him to raise his bat. But perhaps he raised the bat to acknowledge the support of the crowd that had such expectations for him. On his own, he would perhaps have carried on not fazed by his own success.
In evidence of it, Tendulkar rose like the single handed match winning giant, contrary to his miniature height, that he had held onto for so long. Tendulkar’s innings soon made people forget the 17000 run mark and focus on a gem of an innings he was unfolding, unravelling the Australians in the process.
By the time Tendulkar blazed away to his forty-fifth (yes, 45!) ODI hundred, he felled a few records on the way. His century off just eighty-one balls was the fastest hundred in an India v Australia contest and it also marked his ninth ODI century against Australia.
India did lose some soldiers on the way, including Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain along the way, but Tendulkar was pulling on majestically with Suresh Raina for company when the score reached 187 for four at the end of the twenty-seventh over.
