It was an innings that the Australian team will look back on with mixed feelings. While they did make at Mohali in the fourth ODI of the India Australia ODI series, the question is: can India break loose or will Australia hold the reins like the Indian bowlers did?
After Ashish Nehra, the next wicket taker was run outs. If Nehra picked three wickets on the day, run outs resulted in four dismissals for Australia - especially that of the Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, and Cameron White. And it certainly hurt Australia’s chances.
Australia really needed to establish the ascendancy again after their two successive losses and a close win in the first ODI which now seems ages ago. With India leading the India Australia ODI series by a 2-1 margin, a win here will strength India’s stand.
But India will be the team breathing easy in between innings because Australia will feel they underscored on a pitch that clearly favoured the batsmen more than the bowlers. Having said that, Australia failed to put together a match winning partnership because the wickets fell at regular intervals.
Shane Watson fell at the most inappropriate time, having batted for forty-nine runs and Ponting’s run out for fifty-two meant that Australia needed another partnership to be forged. It came in the form of Michael Hussey and Cameron White. White should have ideally carried on, holding on end with sixty-two runs but Nehra effected a run out that virtually derailed the Australians from their game plan. Hussey had disappeared much early to Yuvraj Singh and thereafter, it was a parade of wickets instead of Australia pressing for acceleration and their 250 all out in 39.2 overs only highlighted their adequacy.
