The suspense over Yuvraj Singh’s inclusion for the first ODI in Rajkot remains hanging as does the participation of Muttiah Muralitharan. But the Indian captain has plenty of other worries as well.
Yuvraj Singh’s finger injury may not be as serious as previously imagined. Sustained during the second Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka in Mohali, it has put him in doubt over playing the first of the ODIs tomorrow.
The latest news is that the doctor has stated that Yuvraj can play the match, provided he experiences no pain in the next twenty-four hours. Virat Kohli could well be warming up. But another man is feeling the pain in the fingers as well. Muttiah Muralitharan has not featured in the two Twenty20 matches and Sri Lanka may not want to risk playing him in the first match until the reason for his pain has been ascertained.
But Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be concerned over the glaring lapses in the field, especially in respect of catching. That it has coincided rather awkwardly at a time when Mike Young is working with the team to raise the fielding levels seems rather shambolic that the inspiration is perhaps going the wrong way.
India’s bowling and fielding will need to improve by leaps and bounds by morning tomorrow if they are to keep Sri Lanka down. Kumar Sangakkara and Santh Jayasuriya have benefitted from India’s failings, but with reputation to uphold, both teams are seeking something from the game - India to keep up the image of the top contender and Sri Lanka hoping to change their dismal performance on this tour, barring the first Twenty20.
