This save was on expected cards. Unless pressure got to India, there was little chance that the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Motera in Ahmedabad was going to see a result on day five.
Overnight on 190 for two, apart from losing Amit Mishra, India did not suffer too many hiccups as Gautam Gambhir went his way to another Test century.
Following the two eighty odd runs partnership the previous day, Mishra, who came in as nightwatchman, watched India into another handy forty run partnership before he gave way to Sachin Tendulkar. Going from 256 for three to 341 for four was really a no brainer on a track that refused to yield to the seamers as well as the spinners.
The sixty-six run partnership for the fourth wicket meant that Gambhir went to his Test century and Tendulkar was building towards one. There was nothing in the pitch by way of assistance and there was no Muttiah Muralitharan magic either to create a few dangerous openings.
By the time Gambhir departed, Rangana Herath getting his second wicket of the innings, the draw was simply a matter of time. And the two Indian senior batsmen made the most of it with an unbeaten 137 run partnership. V.V.S. Laxman scored a decent half century for himself but all eyes were on Sachin Tendulkar who touched the 30000 run mark in international cricket to go nicely with his twenty year celebrations and India decided to extend the celebration as the match dragged on till Tendulkar finally reached his forty-third Test century, to cap off a sincere effort from the Indians to thwart Sri Lankan hopes, having gained a 334 run lead only to watch the match peter to a lifeless draw with India making do with 412 for four.
