Sri Lanka went from a strong position at lunch to a vulnerable position by tea as India picked up five wickets to come within touching distance of a series win and grabbing the ICC Test ranking of no.1.
Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan provided the breakthrough after lunch as Sri Lanka appeared to have built some show of confidence after the early fall of Tillekeratne Dilshan in the day. Sreesanth had Tharanga Paranavitana lbw after having made fifty-four runs in a ninety run partnership with the Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara.
Zaheer Khan then drove the Sri Lankans against the wall as he was successful in dislodging two potential batsmen who could have had the Indians toiling further in the field. First Mahela Jayawardene felt to a feather nick and then, Thilan Samaraweera was sent back for a duck to leave Sri Lanka at three down for 135. Pragyan Ojha then gave India the final breakthrough before tea, the wicket of Angelo Matthews for five and Sri Lanka looking further into an abyss at five down for 137, Sangakkara fighting a lone battle unbeaten on a half century.
