What an anti climatic start! After a day of gushing about Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket hit another low, and almost brought to mind the horrific scenes from the sixth ODI against Australia in Guwahati.
The first Test between India and Sri Lanka got underway in Ahmedabad with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain, winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Perhaps he was counting on losing no more than a couple of wickets to the early morning juice at the Motera. But he certainly did not bargain for the mayhem.
On that occasion it was Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger. Sri Lanka replaced Chaminda Vaas with Chanaka Welegedera and reaped instant results here.
After Virender Sehwag gave more start that has been promising but not taking off, Gautam Gambhir lost his stumps to Welegedera and then Sehwag was adjudged lbw for sixteen to leave India at two down for twenty-seven. Sachin Tendulkar could only score four runs, (Dhoni wanted a century from him) before he became Welegedera’s third wicket of the morning. Dammika Prasad showed he could do it by uprooting V.V.S Laxman’s off stump for a duck, leaving India in a hole at four down for thirty-two runs in just 7.4 overs.
In such a dreadful scenario, bringing back memories of the 2008 season when India were bowled out for seventy-six in their first innings against South Africa, Rahul Dravid stuck by his task, five runs short of a half century, with Yuvraj Singh for company in battle at India finished the first innings on 105 for four.
