Ind SL T1 Day 2 Stumps: Match Poised Nicely After Dilshan Heroics
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Nov 17 2009

One would have to say that the match was poised rather nicely at the end of the second day’s play at Motera, Ahmedabad after Sri Lanka ended up with 275 for three at stumps.

India will rue the fact that they did not build up the resources of Rahul Dravid from last one and it has perhaps cost them anywhere between 50 to 75 runs at least in terms of putting additional pressure on Sri Lanka.
Added to it, the start given by the ton man Tillekeratne Dilshan has meant that Sri Lanka could give India hope only in the final session with a couple of wickets but nowhere near comfort as India would like.
Dilshan was dismissed in the session after tea for 112, the score at two down for 189 as Zaheer Khan picked up his first scalp. Kumar Sangakkara followed soon after, having score just thirty-seven and perhaps his shot selection was reflective of his frustrations.
What it has meant that Sri Lanka’s day belonged to Dilshan but if Sri Lanka are to turn the tables on India by getting a huge lead themselves on day, they will need to see out of the first session of the day’s play before making the best use of the pitch.
For India, the ploy is rather simple. Take seven Sri Lankan wickets. But it will be easier said than done. Mahela Jayawardene has dug himself in with an unbeaten thirty-six with Thilan Samaraweera giving good company on forty-five in a partnership worth eighty-six runs.
India have struggled to eke out wickets without assistance and given the way their bowling has fared, perhaps the batting on the morning of the second day’s play is the one to reflect on for future pointers but also, more importantly, focus on a morning of inspired spell if they are to change the current momentum of the match.
