The Indians managed to see out the session and more on day four in trying to avoid an innings defeat. But much remains to be done on day five at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, having lost two key batsmen along the way.
Virender Sehwag did make a half century. But his over optimistic approach was going to get the better of him eventually as it happened after tea. Sehwag’s mistimed shot off Rangana Herath found itself safely into the hands of Angelo Matthews.
But perhaps while Sehwag’s wicket looked like coming, not anticipated was that of Rahul Dravid, even as he looked ready for another solid grind in the middle. His dismissal for thirty-eight off a dubious lbw decision in which Chanaka Welegedera should perhaps consider himself a touch lucky to have got the prized wicket going around the wicket and the ball angling marginally down the leg side perhaps was a bigger disappointment for India.
Amit Mishra joined Gautam Gambhir as the nightwatchman and while he did have a couple of moments where he forgot his purpose briefly, overall, India would consider themselves still in the reckoning for a decent draw, given that the pitch has not been particularly demonic even on day four.
With Gambhir unbeaten on seventy-four, India managed to score 190 for two, in the bid to reduce the deficit of 334 runs but also, trying to get away in this match of high scoring drama, especially of the two Jayawardenes.
